Project Names:
SR 9, Delaware and Harmony Street Intersection Improvement Project This project in located in the City of New Castle, along SR 9. The limits include the intersection of SR 9 and Delaware Street, through the intersection of SR 9 and 3rd Street/Wilmington Road. Project Need: SR 9 provides traffic relief for overflowing traffic from US 13/US 40 and functions as a through-traffic state highway. In 2008, the City of New Castle prompted DelDOT to complete a traffic study of the corridor and develop a comprehensive plan to reduce cut-through traffic. The study was completed by Pennoni Associates Inc. (Pennoni) in 2009 that evaluated the functional and operational characteristics of traffic around the City of New Castle. The study found that cut-through traffic routes result in increased traffic on 3rd Street, 6th Street, and 7th Street, and produces long queues and deficiencies at the intersections. Project OverviewThese projects involve reducing the cut-through traffic by proposing intersection improvements along SR 9, making SR 9 a more desirable route. The following intersections are to be improved:
- SR 9 and Delaware Street/Shopping Center Driveway
- SR 9 and Harmony Street Extended (new intersection) - SR 9 and 6th Street/Chestnut Street - SR 9 and Wilmington Road/3rd Street. The projects also involve drainage improvements and sidewalk additions. SR 9 and a portion of 6th Street and Chestnut Street will be reconstructed. Utility relocations are anticipated. *TimelineThis project is currently in design phase. |
